Welcome to the BioSystems Group at Stony Brook University
The BioSystems Group is an interdepartmental consortium of graduate programs that offers comprehensive didactic coursework and outstanding research opportunities leading to the Ph.D. degree. The BioSystems Group is composed of over 30 faculty members drawn from 6 departments, including Physiology & Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Neurobiology & Behavior, Pharmacological Sciences, Medicine, and Applied Mathematics & Statistics, as well as members from Brookhaven National Laboratories and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. The primary goal of the Group is to provide an educational framework that focuses on preparing students to attack complex integrative problems using interdisciplinary approaches, and to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Students apply to any the affiliated Graduate Program that coincides with their research interests. Upon admission, the students are assigned a graduate adviser from the BioSystems Group who guides them through their program's formal requirements, as well as advises the student on interdisciplinary training. The student subsequently chooses a major professor who serves as mentor and under whose supervision the dissertation research is conducted. Normally, a student pursuing a Ph.D. degree completes course and teaching requirements during the first two years of the program, passes a qualifying examination, and then conducts the dissertation research under the direction of the major professor.
